The 125cc pit bike dirt bike is manufactured in our factory. The model has a 125cc YX engine, 4-speed manual transmission, and reinforced tube frame. The question we get asked most from dealers is not about specs. It's about what happens after the sale. So how do customers keep these bikes running without a constant stream of repair visits? That is what we are hearing from dealers and from the field.
Engine and Oil Service
The engine is air-cooled YX 125cc. That means it uses the airflow over the cylinder head to control the temperature. In slow, technical riding, airflow falls and engine temperature rises. We recommend checking the oil level before each ride. These engines require .8 to .9 liters of oil. Change the oil every 10 to 15 hours of riding time. That's more often than a full-size motocross bike, but the YX engine has a smaller oil capacity and works harder per displacement. One dealer told us his customers changed their oil every 10 hours and got three seasons out of their engines. Those that waited until 30 hours often needed top-end rebuilds within one season.
Chain & Sprockets Maintenance
The 125cc pit bike dirt bike uses a 420 or 428 pitch chain depending on the sprocket setup. Check the chain slack before every ride. The correct clearance is about 25 to 35mm at the center between the sprockets. Too tight and it stresses the bearing on the countershaft. If too loose it can derail or slap the swing arm. Use a nylon brush and O-ring safe cleaner to clean the chain. Lubricate after every wash or riding in dust. A chain that is worn kills sprockets quick. Replace as a set chain and sprockets.
Suspension and brake check
This model has upside down front forks which are oil damped. Change the fork oil every 20-30 hours of hard riding. The rear shock is usually a sealed unit on most models. Inspect the shaft for oil leaks. Hydraulic disk brakes, front and rear, need fresh fluid once a year. Check pad thickness, replace when friction material is under 2mm. Spongy lever? Bleed brakes.
What the Dealer Should Tell the Customer
New buyers usually don't realize that a 125cc pit bike dirt bike requires more maintenance than a full-size bike. A simple checklist at point of sale helps. With each unit, we offer a break-in guide. First oil change at 5 hours, chain adjustment and bolt torque checks after first ride. One dealer who used this guide with every sale said he had fewer warranty claims and more repeat customers. The routine for maintenance is not complicated. It just has to be consistent.
